I wrote the following poem a couple of years ago. It was written in the aftermath of some huge life changes. At the time, I was coming to terms with some good fortune. I know that it may seem like the absolute, most ridiculous thing ever. However, I’ve always considered myself to be nothing more than mediocre at best. So, when I was told how valuable I was to the company and asked to stay on and work from home, I had to Take a Moment, and believe it.
Take a Moment
One of the side effects of working from home, is that it gives you some extra time to contemplate life. The extra time spent driving to and from work was gone. Gone was all the time spent focusing on other people’s problems. Now, I was being forced to spend time contemplating where I was in my life.
While I may see myself as mediocre, if I believe what other people tell me, then I am amazing. I started practicing believing any compliment that was paid to me, even if just for a moment.
Just Believe It
It isn’t easy. I grew up believing that you have to look a certain way, to be beautiful. I don’t look that way, never have. That being said, my husband has been telling me I’m beautiful for 25 years. I think it is high time I start believing it!
As a child, I never stood out in the crowd for being smart, or athletic. Don’t get me wrong, I didn’t really struggle in school, just mediocre. On the other hand, when I went back to college as a older adult, I graduated Summa Cum Laude. Guess I’m pretty smart, too. 🙂
I’ve always been a hard worker. But, for a long time, I believed that I couldn’t have a “real” career because I didn’t get a degree. Then, I got my degree, which put my foot in the door. It did not, however, make me a valuable employee. I did that, by just being me.
Practice Makes Perfect
As with anything else in life, learning to believe in yourself takes practice. It takes practice to ignore all of the ads and articles telling you that you should be something other than what you are. Believing the compliments paid, in spite of the contrary “evidence” takes a lot of practice.
My practice has been to actively notice when someone pays me a compliment. I Take a Moment and Believe It. In this way, I am also appreciating the compliment.
We can also practice affirming our greatness!
Repeat after me:
I hope that you have enjoyed this moment. 🙂
